For a landscape-lighting run beside a driveway, a compact IP68 box may be the practical answer. For a 120V branch circuit mounted outdoors, a listed NEMA enclosure with approved hubs, proper grounding, and correct wire fill is usually the better choice. The right box depends on the wiring method and the water exposure, not just its size or color.
What Makes a Junction Box Suitable for Wet Locations?
A wet-location junction box is part of a complete wiring system. The enclosure, cover, gasket, cable glands or conduit fittings, conductors, and splice connectors must work together. Water can enter through an unused knockout, a loose cover screw, a cable gland that does not fit the cable diameter, or a conduit run that carries condensation into the box.
For US outdoor work, look for a box that is listed for its intended environment. NEMA 3R enclosures are generally intended for outdoor rain exposure and include drainage provisions, but they are not the first choice for direct hose spray. NEMA 4 is designed for water directed at the enclosure, while NEMA 4X adds improved corrosion resistance - useful near pools, coastal areas, fertilizer storage, and other corrosive environments. NEMA 6P is intended for prolonged submersion under conditions stated by the manufacturer.
IP ratings provide another useful reference. An IP65 box resists dust and water jets, IP67 is commonly used for temporary immersion protection, and IP68 indicates protection for immersion at a depth and duration specified by the manufacturer. IP68 does not mean every IP68 box performs identically. Check the stated immersion depth, cable range, and temperature limits before using one underground or near water features.

1. NEMA 3R metal or nonmetallic boxes for covered exterior circuits
A NEMA 3R box works well for wall-mounted exterior branch-circuit connections where the box sees rain but is not regularly sprayed by a hose or irrigation head. Typical uses include an exterior lighting junction, a connection for an outdoor receptacle circuit, or a conduit transition on a garage wall.
Choose a corrosion-resistant box and cover. If using metal, bond the enclosure with an equipment grounding conductor and use listed grounding hardware. Keep knockouts closed with fittings or listed closure plugs. An open knockout defeats the enclosure rating quickly.
2. NEMA 4X boxes for washdown and corrosive areas
NEMA 4X is a stronger fit where water hits the box directly or corrosion is a concern. This category is useful for outdoor utility equipment, pool-adjacent controls where permitted, light commercial maintenance areas, and exposed building-side connections.
The enclosure alone is not enough. Use wet-location-rated conduit hubs or cable glands, and tighten them to the manufacturer’s torque guidance. A NEMA 4X box with a standard indoor connector is only as weather-resistant as its weakest fitting.
3. IP65 or IP66 compact boxes for protected outdoor splices
Compact IP-rated junction boxes are useful for low-voltage lighting, security devices, signage, and other protected outdoor wiring jobs. They are often easier to mount in tight spaces than larger electrical enclosures and may include a gasketed cover with multiple cable glands.
Confirm that the gland accepts the outside diameter of your cable. A gland designed for a 0.20-inch cable will not seal a 0.35-inch landscape wire properly, even if the cover is tightly closed. Leave enough service loop inside the box so the conductors are not pulled tight when the cover is removed.
4. IP68 gel-filled or gasketed boxes for landscape lighting
For low-voltage landscape lighting, an IP68-rated junction box can protect branch connections from saturated soil, mulch, and irrigation exposure when installed according to its listing. This is often a cleaner, more serviceable option than leaving a connection exposed under a fixture.
Use direct-bury-rated cable where the installation requires it. Common landscape cable sizes include 12 AWG and 14 AWG copper, selected based on transformer capacity, circuit length, and voltage drop. A long 12V run may need 12 AWG or larger conductors to keep fixture brightness consistent.
Waterproof direct-bury connectors can be used where they are specifically rated for that purpose. Standard push-in connectors, lever connectors, and ordinary wire nuts are not waterproof by default. If those connectors are used outdoors, they must be inside an appropriate IP68 or other properly rated waterproof enclosure.
5. Large weatherproof boxes for multiple splices
A larger enclosure is the safer choice when several cables enter one location. It gives you room to separate line-voltage and low-voltage wiring, route conductors without sharp bends, and complete future troubleshooting without damaging existing splices.
Do not crowd a small box simply because the cover still closes. For line-voltage work, box fill must comply with applicable electrical code requirements. As a general field rule, count every insulated conductor, account for grounding conductors as required, and size the box for the largest conductor present. A cramped box creates heat, stresses insulation, and makes a future repair harder than it needs to be.
6. Underground-rated splice enclosures for direct-bury connections
An underground splice requires more than a rainproof box. Select a system specifically listed for direct burial or underground use, with the correct cable entry seals and splice method. Some applications use resin-filled or gel-filled systems; others use listed underground junction enclosures designed for accessible service.
Never assume a standard plastic utility box can be buried just because it has a gasket. Soil pressure, standing water, freeze-thaw movement, and damaged cable entries can compromise an enclosure that was only intended for surface mounting.
7. Conduit junction boxes for permanent outdoor branch circuits
Where wiring is run in PVC or other approved outdoor conduit, a conduit junction box provides a durable, serviceable transition point. Match the box material to the environment and use fittings approved for the conduit type. PVC conduit is common for damp and wet areas, but it still needs correctly installed solvent-welded joints, expansion planning where needed, and drainage considerations.
Pull conductors rated for wet locations inside outdoor conduit. THWN or THWN-2 insulation is commonly used because outdoor conduit can become a wet location through condensation. THHN-only marking is not enough unless the conductor also carries a wet-location rating such as THWN or THWN-2.
Size the Box and Splices Before You Mount It
Start by identifying the circuit. For typical copper residential branch circuits, 14 AWG is used on 15-amp circuits, 12 AWG on 20-amp circuits, and 10 AWG on 30-amp circuits when the equipment and overcurrent protection are correctly matched. Do not mix wire sizes casually, and never increase breaker size to stop a nuisance trip.
Then identify cable entries. A junction box may need room for two incoming cables, a fixture whip, grounding conductors, connectors, and a service loop. If a cable enters through a knockout, use a listed connector sized for that cable. Where a cable gland is used, match both the gland’s clamping range and the cable jacket diameter.
For a line-voltage splice, strip conductors to the connector manufacturer’s specified length. Make a secure hot-to-hot, neutral-to-neutral, and ground-to-ground connection. For stranded wire, use a connector listed for stranded conductors and for the wire gauge in use. Many lever connectors accept a broad range, often around 24 AWG to 12 AWG depending on the model, but confirm the individual connector marking before installation.

Install approved hubs, glands, or cable connectors before pulling wire. Bring in enough conductor for service, but avoid stuffing excess cable into the enclosure. Complete the splices with connectors rated for the conductor material, gauge, and environment. Copper-to-aluminum connections require a connector specifically listed for that combination - do not use a standard connector as a substitute.
Inspect the gasket, remove debris from the sealing surface, and tighten the cover evenly. Test the circuit after closing the enclosure. If this is a 120V outdoor circuit, confirm that required GFCI protection is present and functioning. When local code, permit rules, or the circuit condition is unclear, bring in a qualified electrician.
